Carbon
monoxide (CO) has been named the 'silent killer' because it is
poisonous gas which is colourless, odourless and tasteless. It
is produced by the incomplete burning of carbon fuels, such as
gas, oil, wood and coal.
When
carbon monoxide enters the blood stream it prevents vital oxygen
being carried to tissues and organs.
Carbon Monoxide can kill quickly without
warning, it can cause serious long term illness if breathed in
over a period of time and prolonged exposure can cause paralysis
and brain damage. Awareness of the risks of Carbon Monoxide poisoning
and taking steps to prevent it can dramatically reduce risks.
Deaths
from carbon monoxide poisoning generated by domestic heating appliances
have received a great deal of publicity in recent years. The build
up of carbon monoxide can arise from a faulty appliance but is
more often due to misuse, poor installation, poor maintenance,
blocked or leaky flues or generally inadequate ventilation. Some
of these problems can also arise when ventilation or flue ducts
are deliberately obstructed to prevent draughts. The use of a
carbon
monoxide detector will alert you to a build up of gas.
There
are regulations relating to gas appliances in rented accommodation,
but as yet none relate to appliances burning other fuels, portable
gas appliances or owner occupied homes. However, there are measures
you can take to reduce the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning in
your own home!
